The Bahamas Davis Cup was able to come up with a big win on Saturday against Guatemala. Baker Newman secured the first singles win for The Bahamas in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. Kevin would follow up with another win in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. The team was facing the possibility of relegation to Group IV and was able to stave this off by winning 0-2 over Guatemala, the doubles match was not played.
After the draws on Tuesday, Team Bahamas landed in Pool B which included Paraguay and Jamaica, two teams who played in Group II this year. They were both recently relegated to Group III. Despite the tough competition Team Bahamas put up a great effort and closed out strong to remain in the Americas Group III.
On the first day of competition on Wednesday, Team Bahamas fought hard against the #1 seed Paraguay but came up short. Paraguay took the two singles and the Bahamas won the doubles. Spencer Newman played in Rubber #2 and lost against Borba 3-6, 3-6. In rubber #1 Kevin Major Jr lost the 1st set 5-7 to Vallejo and had to retire at the end of the first set due to a match injury. Captain Marvin Rolle and Baker Newman would give Team Bahamas its first match win with a thrilling three-setter over Vallejo and Del Puerto of Paraguay 6-2, 5-7,7-6(5).
On Thursday, Team Bahamas would go 1-2 against Jamaica. Baker Newman would see singles action against Rowland of Jamaica. Baker fell in 2 competitive sets 6-7(1) 5-7. Spencer Newman would play in Rubber 1 due to Kevin Major sustaining a foot injury against Paraguay. Spencer lost to Bicknell 2-6, 1-6. Coach Marvin Rolle and Spencer Newman would go on court for doubles giving The Bahamas the win 6-2, 6-2.
Team Bahamas sustained a loss Friday to the host country Costa Rica. Baker Newman would see singles action again playing well and giving The Bahamas a jump winning in straight sets 6-2 6-0. Spencer Newman would play in Rubber 1 losing to Jesse Flores 3-6, 2-6. Coach Marvin Rolle and Baker Newman would go on the court for doubles falling short 3-6, 2-6. Despite the pool play losses Team Bahamas ended on a high note with the win over Guatemala.
The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) thanks Coach Marvin Rolle, Kevin Major Jr. Spencer Newman and Baker Newman for a strong showing at the Davis Cup in Escazu. Their dedication and hard work were evident in Costa Rica. Despite the injury challenges the team was able to end the tournament with an important win, ensuring that The Bahamas remains in Group III along with Panama and Costa Rica. Paraguay, Jamaica and Venezuela move onto Group II as Guatemala and Puerto Rico will be relegated to Group IV next year.
