Today The Bahamas Jr Davis Cup team played in the quarterfinal round of the Junior Davis Cup and on the girl’s side The Bahamas Jr BJK Cup won over Jamaica 3-0. The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association fielded two teams – Jr Davis Cup (Jerald, William, Jackson & Coach Bradley Bain) and Jr BJK Cup (Jalisa, BreAnn, Saphirre and Coach Marion Bain.
The Bahamas Junior Davis Cup came out of their pool with a stellar 3-0 record. They secured a coveted spot in the quarterfinals but came up short 1-2 against the Dominican Republic (DR). The team was tied 1-1 with the Dominican Republic after Jackson Mactaggart dropped his singles and Jerald Carroll won his singles 6-1, 6-0 in record time (35 minutes). It would come down to doubles and the duo of Jerald and Jackson who also won against the Jamaican team earlier in the competition would fight but lost 2-6, 4-6 vs the DR. The team finished 5th out of 17 nations. In his Jr Davis Cup debut, Jerald Carroll had a stellar run in singles going 4 for 4 against Jamaica, Barbados, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.
The Bahamas Jr Davis Cup was victorious over Nicaragua yesterday. Jackson Mactaggart played well as he won in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Coach Bradley Bain noted “He played a brilliant match’. Jerald Carroll was up next and continued his unbeaten singles streak with a spectacular win 6-0, 6-2. William McCartney and Jackson added the icing by winning highly contested doubles 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. The win advanced the Bahamas Boys into the PlayOff Rounds for the top 5 placements.
The Bahamas Junior Davis Cup also won their tie over the 7th seed Bermuda. Jackson Mactaggart went up first playing in the #2 position and came out with a straight-set victory 6-1, 6-1. Jerald Carroll is up next in the #1 position and he goes into the second set up after winning the first set 6-1. The unseeded Bahamas team secured the win over the 7th seed, Barbados. William McCartney and Jackson Mactaggart won in doubles 6-2 6-3 for a clean sweep against Bermuda 3-0.
On Monday the team won over the 3rd seed Jamaica. Team Bahamas came out ahead 2-1. William McCartney played strong but did not get the win 2-6,1-6. He was followed by Jerald Carroll who had an impressive singles win 6-2, 6-1. It would come down to the doubles matchup where Jerald and Jackson Mactaggart were successful in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
Today The Bahamas Bille Jean King (BJK) Cup team captained by Coach Marion Bain won their first tournament match against Jamaica. Saphirre Ferguson won in her singles 7-5 6-7, 10-2 and BreAnn Ferguson followed with a straight-set win in the #1 spot 6-2,6-3. Jalisa Clarke and Saphirre teamed up for the clean sweep 3-0 against Jamaica. The team will see action tomorrow to end on top of the consolation rounds in the 9th position.
In pool play, Team Bahamas played a very competitive tie against St Lucia in their first appearance on the court on Tuesday. BreAnn Ferguson went up first and won in straight sets over Iyana Paul 6-3, 6-3. Jalisa Clarke playing in the #1 position fought but lost vs Jessica Eudovich, The doubles pairing of Saphirre Ferguson and BreAnn Ferguson played well but lost in a highly contested match 6-7(5) 6-7(6). The Girls also lost to the host nation Guatemala who is seeded #2. Sapphire Ferguson playing #2 Singles vs Guatemala fought but lost 1-6,1-6 Jalissa Clarke the #1 Singles also played hard but lost 1-6,1-6. The Doubles duo of BreAnn and Jalisa lost to Guatemala 2-6,3-6.
Team Bahamas has represented well on this international stage, a great start to the 2023 team competition for The Bahamas.
