On the road to the Quarterfinals, The Bahamas U14 Girls won yesterday, 3-0 over Suriname. In singles, Kaylah Fox won 6-2, 6-0 and the #1 Tatyana Madu won 6-0, 6-2. Briana Houlgrave and Tatyana would seal the deal in the doubles winning 6-1, 6-3. On Monday The Bahamas faced Costa Rica. In singles, Kaylah Fox went to a third set thriller 6-2, 2-6, 3-6 that lasted close to 3 hours. Tatyana Madu lost 1-6, 1-6 and the doubles featuring Briana Houlgrave and Kaylah Fox went the distance 4-6, 6-4, 8-10. Briana and Kaylah teamed up for doubles, the match which started around 6:30 pm went into the night ending at 9:05 pm. Coach Ricardo Demeritte noted afterwards that “The girls put up a good fight”. Tomorrow they face Trinidad and Tobago and with a win can advance to the semifinals.
The Bahamas Boys will play the Consolation rounds against Bermuda. Today the Boys played a very good match against Barbados (1-2). Chase Newbold the youngest member of the team at 11 years old debuted in his first national team playing strong he lost 3-6 3-6. Patrick Mactaggart playing in the #1 position recorded a back-to-back win in singles. He won in three sets silencing his opponent in the third set 2-6 6-2 6-0. Patrick and Reeves Mahelis split sets 4-6 6-3 but lost in the tiebreak 9-11. Yesterday The Bahamas Boys lost another tough matchup against Curacao 1-2. Reeves Mahelis playing on his first national team fought but lost 0-6, 5-7. The #1 Patrick Mactaggart won easily in straight sets 6-2 6-4. Patrick & Chase teamed up for doubles in what would be a nailbiter. They lost in 3 sets 6-1, 2-6, 4-10. The team is captained by Coach Artie Johnson. Monday the team fell to the #2 seed El Salvador. Reeves Mahelis who is also representing nationally for the first time lost 0-6, 1-6. Patrick Mactaggart lost 3-6, 3-6. Patrick & Chase Newbold lost in doubles 3-6 & 1-6. The Boys had some very competitive matches.
The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association congratulates both teams. The coaches and players are representing well at the World Juniors Tennis Championships in the Dominican Republic. All the players on the national teams are participating in this age category for the very first time, we are so very proud of each of them. The girls have advanced to the Quarterfinals and we pray they have much success tomorrow. The Boys are also continuing to play tomorrow and we wish them well in the consolation rounds.
