Today, the rain came down but nonetheless the kids came out to the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association’s (BLTA) “Play Tennis” Program held earlier this morning. The event consisted of kids between the ages of 4 -15 who participated in a fun-filled environment, as they were introduced to the sport of Tennis. There were various skills and drills inspired from the recently held Play Tennis Course sponsored by The BLTA and led by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
The event was organized by Perry Newton, head of Junior Development. Coach Newton stated that “We are excited about the level of enthusiasm of the children and their parents. We have a focus to make tennis accessible to the younger audience. We have a group of hardworking tennis professionals across The Bahamas working to achieve one goal and that is to develop the next generation of tennis players.”
Also assisting in the program were President Darnette Weir, Coach Rita Roy, Coach Larry Rolle, Coach Bjorn Ferguson, Coach Esther Newton and Donte Armbrister. President Weir stated in reference to the “Play Tennis” Program, “There were many newcomers today and we will continue to be resilient in our efforts to grow the sport. It was equally rewarding to see in action four of our recent participants from the Play Tennis Course hosted by the BLTA this past March. “
Pictured in the attached, are the kids and coaches at today’s session. The next session will be held Saturday, May 25th at 11 a.m. at the National Tennis Centre. Registration is at 10:30 a.m. and cost is only $1. All kids can come out and learn how to play tennis!
President Weir is soliciting used racquets for the Program from parents, players and the tennis community at large. If you are in possession of some used junior racquets that you are not using and would like to donate them to the Program, please let us know. We can also arrange for pick-up.
