The 28th edition of the AID Claycourt Championships is in full swing with the participants in the Men’s Open Doubles, Men’s Junior Vets and Mixed Doubles categories taking to the courts this week.
Yesterday was an electrifying day of tennis as the lighting suspended two matches in the Men’s Jr Vets Quarterfinal: Jon Isaacs vs Wayne Thompson and Alejandro Mesples vs Stafford Armbrister. Both Jon and Alejandro are up one set in their respective matches and will continue to play today. In other quarterfinal matchups, the #1 seed Scott Reddick won over Perry Newton; and Harrington Saunders won over Tshombe Johnson. Scot and Harrington have advanced to the semifinals.
Mixed Doubles this week saw some stiff competition. In a nailbiter, Stafford Armbrister & Valorie Rees held off the challenge from the duo of Perry Newton and Esther Newton in a thrilling three-setter that ended in a match tiebreak 10-8. Armbrister and Rees will face Sh’Ron Saunders and Tom McDermott in the semifinal round today and Everette Munroe and Marva Conyers will face Bjorn Ferguson and Richette Percentie tomorrow in the next semifinal matchup.
In Men’s Doubles, Perry Newton and Donte Armbrister have advanced to the semifinals and will face the #2 seed of Godfrey Virgil and Kevin Major Sr. After a walkover by Nkosi and Tshaka Symonette, the top seed Ken Kerr and Bjorn Ferguson advanced to the finals also.
The event is being held at the Gym Tennis Club. The tournament referee is Mr Mickey Williams assisted by Mr Everette Munroe. Finals matches in the 3 categories(Men Open Doubles Jr Vet Singles, and Mixed Doubles) will take place over the upcoming weekend with two divisions, Men’s Jr Vet Doubles and Men Open Singles starting on the weekend. The tournament runs from 13th – 27th August 2022.
