A welcome reception for the International tennis teams from the USA, Barbados Canada and the host country Bahamas was held at Breezes Hotel last night. It was a night for the players to meet and greet each other as IC President Kit Spencer introduced the team captains. Mr Mickey Williams the Tournament Referee highlighted the rules and format for the tour during last night’s reception.
Today the week-long kicks off at Nassau Lawn Tennis Club on Market Street at 9:30 am. The event features the top older players from the respective countries playing men, ladies and mixed doubles in combined age pair categories from 105 to 125 years. The Bahamas team is captained by Neil Mactaggart. Among his players will be former top Caribbean, Davis Cup Captain and former player for the Bahamas Davis Cup John Antonas. Also on the team will be the number 1 ITF-ranked lady in the world in the 75+ age category Sue Kimball who for many years was a teacher here and has kept up a strong contact with The Bahamas and its International Tennis Club (IC).
Two inter-country matches are scheduled each day starting at 9.30 am and 1.30 pm with all teams playing every other team over the 5 days to decide the eventual Champion team. The USA is the current holder of this title. Each inter-country match consists of two men’s doubles, one ladies doubles and two mixed doubles matches.
The International Tennis Clubs (IC) are made up of forty countries around the world. They consist of top International players and National title holders in their country who respect the IC Tradition of “Hands across the net, friendship across the ocean”. We look forward to some great international tennis competition this week as Team Bahamas will see action for the first time tomorrow at 9 a.m.
