The Qualifying rounds are complete and Main Draw begins for The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junkanoo Bowl Tournament today. Top junior tennis players are participating in the tournament from local and abroad ranked up to 216 on the boys’ side and 359 on the girls’ side. The top-ranked on the girls’ side is our very own Sydney Clarke. Sydney was the winner in the most recent ITF Goombay Splash held in November 2018 here at home. She is hoping to make another great run in this U18s ITF tournament.
Other persons representing from The Bahamas include Donte Armbrister, Jacobi Bain, Peyton Anderson, Elana Mackey, Kofi Bowe, Sydni Kerr, Gabrielle Simms, Anthony Burrows Jr., Perjae Major and Kinza Johnson. Jacobi is seeded 6th in the tournament on the boys’ side.
Newcomers are Denali Nottage, Michael Major Jr. and Kaylee Kanuka who will see some great action and are hoping to advance also as they get their feet wet in the U18s ITF.
They will face top juniors from Canada, Italy, Great Britain, Russia, Denmark, France, USA, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, Switzerland and China.
The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association’s local U14 tournament Semifinals and Finals will also take place today starting at 2:30 p.m. where Dentry Mortimer Jr., the #1 seed on the boys’ side will face Clint Newry in the Finals and the winner in the semifinals between Saphirre Ferguson, the #2 seed and BreAnn Ferguson will face the #1 seed Sierra Rodgers.
The local U16s tournament is slated to start tomorrow. Matchplay for the U18 ITF begins at nine o’clock this morning at the NTC. Admission is free! Come out in support of the local talented Bahamian tennis athletes. The Tournament Referee is Mr. Mickey Williams assisted by Mr. George Baxter.
